There are many ways in which the term ‘talent’ is defined across differing industries, and organisations may prefer to adopt their own version rather than accepting any universal or prescribed definitions. It is however helpful to start with the general definitions for both ‘talent’ and ‘talent management’:

  • Talent consists of those who individually can make a difference to organisational performance either through their immediate contribution or, in the longer-term, by demonstrating higher levels of potential and exceptional natural ability.
  • Talent management is the attraction, identification, engagement, development, retention and deployment of those individuals who are of particular value to an organisation, either in view of their ‘higher levels of potential’ or ‘exceptional natural ability’ for the future or because they are fulfilling critical roles.

These definitions underline the importance of recognising that, even it is possible, it is not enough to simply attract individuals with high potential. Developing, managing and retaining those individuals as part of a planned strategy for talent is equally important, as well as adopting systems to measure the return on this investment.

Many organisations are also now widening their definition, examining the ‘talents’ of all their staff and working on ways to develop their strengths. In its broadest sense the term ‘talent’ may be used to encompass the entire workforce of an organisation.
